G-Tek - Majestic [SILK021]

Panamanian artist Orlando Garcia, a.k.a G-Tek, has stunned progressive fans this past year with his tremendous talent for multi-dimensional sound design and melodically intricate soundscapes. "New School FM" is G-Tek's take on the nu-80's phenomenon sweeping prog house at the moment. A vintage bass and retro rhythm propel the song forward in the first half. A new lead element later emerges, revealing itself in the break as an Andy Moor-esque stutter vox line. When all of these elements unite following the drop, the result is euphoric. "Fantastic" initially takes a deeper turn, with a more subdued rhythm and funky, side-chained bassline. Yet, slowly but surely, the tune develops into another progressive classic, complete with another breath-taking breakdown. Rounding out the package, the title cut, "Majestic," is an exhilarating ride; beginning with a simple chord progression, the lead melody is soon met by a series of sparkling synth "highlights" and, later on in the breakdown, a full-bodied trance bass. With the release of this brilliant 3-track EP, Silk is exceedlingly proud to welcome G-Tek to its roster.

Sean Marx - Do Mo Chailin [SILKRL006]

Ever since his summer 2008 smash "Fifth Exit," Irish artist Sean Marx has received the support and praise of the world's biggest DJ's, including Armin, Above & Beyond, and Markus Schulz. Sean's debut with Silk Royal, a three-track EP, once again showcases his characteristically heavy-hitting beats, sparkling arpeggios, and emotional, anthemic breakdowns. The package beings with the title cut, "Do Mo ChailĂn," in which brilliantly blended arpeggios are supported by a chunky bassline. The breakdown offers even more magic, as the beats are stripped away and a beautiful lead melody emerges. The second track, "Evolve," is a vintage Sean Marx peak-hour stormer, with a furious bassline and stunning lead arpeggio. Last but not least, "Through the Static" once again employs a glorious lead arp and a trance-influenced bassline. In addition, the track offers a cinematic breakdown, in which an echoing dialogue sample creates great anticipation for the huge drop to follow.

My pick is Evolve track; u choose yours! ;)

How progressive house sounds in 2009 (Interview w/ Daniel Portman)

Our friend & PP member Freddie is off for a while so i wish him a really awesome time there where he's heading off. ;)

Weird thing happened with Beatport this morning; they have made some changes so there is no more option Just Added in the sidebar - thats why i cant supply u with links to the best & freshest releases from today (or maybe nothing has been added this morning; we'll see yet). So i surfed a bit through Beatportal and stumbeld upon one interesting article called How progressive house sounds in 2009. Its basicly set of interviews with some of the most respective Progressive artists of today. U can read full article here (How progressive house sounds in 2009) and i picked up the intervew with Daniel Portman to show u here today at PP. So lets here what he has to say about modern progressive sound. ;)

How progressive house sounds in 2009 (Interview w/ Daniel Portman)

Hailing from the Swiss-made Helvetic Nerds axis of artists (which includes EDX, Chris Reece, and Dinka), Daniel Portman has developed a sound, that shares little in common with the progressive house movement of old, but his music still retains some of prog’s key elements thus pushing him towards that osmotic box.

Melody progression, subtly interchanging sound lines, and buckets of arpeggiated synths have bundled him as progressive in scope, albeit adrenaline-fueled and digitally smoothed.

He represents the new guard of progressive house producers, who value energy and explosive drops as much as delicate beat astuteness.

In 2009, Portman’s firecrackers have reached some of the biggest imprints operating in the murky grey between progressive house, trance, and commercial techno, including PinkStar Records, Enormous Tunes, Anjunadeep, and Unreleased Digital, who recently dropped his dancefloor destroyer ‘Virtual Suicide’.

How has progressive house changed over the years?

Every kind of music has changed over the years, and so has progressive house. Back some years ago popular progressive house was mostly kinda tribal house beats, swinging hat loops, and deep basslines.

Over the past few years there was a progression of new sounds from deep house as well as from the trance genre that mixed with electro and house beats, and so progressive house became a new face. The progressive genre is certainly the most flexible genre, where it has allowed to combine with all kinds of dance genres today.

Describe what the term ‘progressive’ means to you, in the context of prog house.

Well, it’s the word itself: it’s a progression, with alternative build ups. You don’t have to follow any structures or rules. As I already said, progressive means you’re able to combine forces from different styles of house music, to lead creativity out of bounds. There are no rules at all! I’m proud to be tagged as a progressive house artist.

Is progressive house gaining in popularity?

Progressive house is always gaining popularity as the genre is changing often. The different influences always brings progressive house to a new and brighter audience.

Since I’ve followed this scene, I’ve been surprised by how much progressive house as grown. There was a time when house DJs didn’t give a shit about progressive house because it was too different to what they were playing in their sets. But nowadays, I figured out, DJs from all genres watch the progressive scene and also support and play this kind of music.

Which progressive house artists should we keep an eye on, and why?

There are a few great producers that I follow regularly. Let me pick a few artists who do progressive house the way I’d consider “progressive”.

Henry Saiz’ music is brilliant, it’s a bit trance influenced on the atmosphere with techy beats, and he’s always doing great mixdowns.

I’m a big fan of Dousk, as he’s able to combine progressive house and techno. I love his work.

Most of my DJ sets contain tracks or remixes from D-Nox & Beckers. Their stuff is continuously top quality, and it’s not only my crowd that dig their music.

Stan Kolev and Jerome Isma-Ae – What else do I need to say? They are progressive house. They’ve been both a big inspiration to how my music sounds today

Dj Rap - Give It All Away [Inc. Sultan & Ned Shepard Remix] [MOSUSS23DIG]

DJ Rap is back with Synthesis, a rock-tronic hybrid album is the follow up to her globally successful Learning Curve. A darker edgier side of DJ Rap, she not only played guitar and piano on the majority of the album, but sung all the vocals as well. So if you are looking for pretty 4 on the floor Disco this is not the release. Take a bit of angst ridden Alanis Morrisette, the melodic dreaminess of Imogean Heap and a hint of BT and welcome to Synthesis.

The albums first single "Give It All Away" with remixes from Sultan & Ned Shepard, Starkillers, Thomas Sagstad and Metasyn.

Beltek - Running Backwards [AVA4330]

We still all remember the excellent "Kenta" and Beltek already brings a fantastic new track, entitled "Running Backwards". This is one of those incredibly sonic cuts with a melody that immediately grabs you by the throat. A definite clubby but at the same time minimal atmosphere completely lifts the theme of the song up to the extent where you simply have to continue listening while dancing. Focus on that deceivingly simple bassline, perfectly matching every note of the strings; it will keep you on the dancefloor.

The full and crisp sound of "Running Backwards" doesn't hammer on, but adds a fat and spellbinding drive to your live gig. Call it a track that perfectly matches the ISOS sound and you know what we mean. Expect this one in the live sets of the big names; "Running Backwards" is a sure shot ready to make it big!

Exclusive interview with Darin Epsilon !

Today we at Pure People are really happy to be able to show all our visitors an exclusive interview with one of the biggest stars around, Darin Epsilon!

Here are a few questions were Darin puts out his thoughts, only for you people, read and enjoy!

What is your inspiration when you produce? When you are creating music, is it that you hear a sound that someone already made and think, hmm this is something I could do in a different way, or is it just that you’re sitting in the car listening to the radio and getting a feeling for something? How does it work for you?

Inspiration can come from many places, it can also strike when you least suspect it. For me, some of my best song ideas have come from just doing normal everyday things. It can be as ordinary as taking a shower or walking to the post office.

Generally, I am most inspired when listening to other people's music. Whenever I hear something well-written, my mind begins to race and my imagination will just take over. Before long, I'll have some ideas written down that I can then use in my own productions. I have an extremely comical system for jotting down my song ideas, you'll have to see my scribbles sometime.

We know you DJ a lot. What part do you think is the best, the DJ part or the producing part?

Well, it's hard to compare the two, really. I find DJing very satisfying because you can see the crowd reaction and feed off their energy at the same moment. Generally, if they're happy, then I'm happy. It's a very different dynamic when compared to the studio, where you will often be working alone or with one other person. In this case, the only person to impress is yourself.

What I can say is that some of my favorite moments ever have been related to working in the studio. I get very excited when something really cool happens by accident. Sometimes it can take hours to come up with an idea that actually fits the track, but the blood, sweat, and tears that goes into each project is what makes producing so satisfying for me.

We also know you’re based in Los Angeles. What is the scene like over there? Is the progressive scene small? What can you tell us about it?

The dance music scene in Los Angeles is quite phenomenal! Top international DJs are playing every week, sometimes every other day. There's a lot of interest in the music from the younger generation here as well. That being said, progressive music in relation to the rest of the scene is quite small. Like most other big cities, there is a clear divide between Epic Trance and Minimal House/Techno. Representing a small scene motivates me to work even harder because I often feel that the people here don't realize what they're missing.

When you produce, what equipment (software/hardware) do you use?

I have some bits of hardware here and there but I'm primarily software. I've played around with almost all the DAWs and now I'm using a combination of Logic with Ableton Live and Reason rewired in. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. I haven't yet found a magic program that is great at everything.

Logic comes with its own unique set of killer sounds, but I also heavily rely on VSTs such as Rob Papen Predator, reFX Nexus, NI Massive, among many others. I'm also a big fan of Spectrasonics but I haven't yet bought a copy of Omnisphere. You could say that it's on my Christmas wish-list this season ;)

Many things have been said about the illegal spreading of music. What do you think about it? Do bloggers help the scene in a promotional way (newcomers getting seen) or is it killing the progressive scene (people can’t make a living of it)? What are your thoughts in this subject?

It's a double-edged sword. On one hand, labels and musicians are losing hundreds, maybe even thousands, of dollars in revenue from illegal file-sharing. On the other hand, it's getting their music out there to a wider range of people than ever before. A lot can be said about either side, but from a producer's standpoint, I would really prefer if people bought the artist's tracks if they appreciated his or her work. I notice a lot of quality producers picking up part-time jobs these days because they cannot fully support themselves doing music. This leads to less quality music coming out or some producers completely dropping out, which ultimately hurts the scene.

Darin, what can we expect from you in the coming months, a lot of new releases and a lot of gigs across the world?

I've got a handful of releases coming at the end of December which I'm excited about. I personally feel it's my best work to date. We're expecting a vinyl release for the remix I just completed for Baroque. I've also confirmed a remix of Dresden & Johnston (Dave Dresden of Gabriel & Dresden fame) for release in 2010. As for gigs, I'll be making my debut at LA's top club, Vanguard, and touring Mexico the week before Christmas. January and February are generally slow, so I'll probably be focusing on playing within the US. Then before you know it, I'll be in Miami for WMC.

I know you are going to Europe for gigs (in Bulgaria) in the nearest future. What’s the feeling about it? Excited? Is it your first time over there for gigs?

I'm extremely excited to be playing in Bulgaria for the first time. My radio show Perspectives gets a lot of airplay over there. We've actually been planning the tour for several months, so it's great to finally see everything coming together. I hope to play more in eastern Europe in the future. People say really great things about the parties here.

We @ Pure People thank you for taking your time to make this interview, it’s much appreciated. We from PP wish you all the best in the future!

Paul Keeley - Cloud 9 / Everytime We Do / Plastic Heroin [ANJDEE060D]

Paul Keeley has had a corking year with a creative hot streak that has seen him putting his name to some of Anjunadeep's most essential records. His latest three-track EP is the second of its kind to come off the Anjunadeep press and its eclectic mix of styles and influences ensure that it will go down as another hit.
With its long, flowing, sun touched melody, opener 'Cloud 9' is guaranteed to transport you to such a place and is the perfect soundtrack for reminiscing over the summer months gone by.

Following in its wake is 'Everytime We Do', a classy synth houser with a silky groove and full of luscious melodies that bubble gently to the surface, ideal for slipping into the more sophisticated set. 'Plastic Heroin' signs things off and gets all moody on us with its squelchy bass, spacey atmospheres and Goa and acid influences, proof if any was needed that the man from Montreal is set to go into 2010 on a high note!
