Tanja La Croix - Need More [DHRO030]

Diamondhouse won't stop! The label's next release in its 5th anniversary year is one more time coming from swiss star djane Tanja La Croix and even tops the quality of her previous publications "Gente" and "Aphrodisia" which were out on Diamondhouse back in 2009.

"Need More" is a true club stomper combining classic house elements with more progressive moods. Heavy beats, basslines, the catchy piano sample and a wicked vocal make clear: "we need more of that"! After the continuously rising quality of remixers already in the past releases Diamondhouse this time even managed to get a remix treatment by one of the most hyped artists of the moment: D.O.N.S. from Germany! Further mixes from Diamondhouse's fresh talents "Ivan Project" from Columbia and "Ezzy Safaris" from Russia. Once again an outstanding release with multicultural backgrounds. House is a melting pot! Do you need more?

We need more! Check it out!

EDU - Purple Rose / Sweet Amber [NELLIE049]

Take a look at EDU’s latest journal entry, “Purple Rose / Sweet Amber” - a page filled with stories of both melancholy and elation.

Purple Rose is a blue-blooded piece that narrates the tales of a bleak day. Listen carefully; this track has lots of desolations to tell. Contrasting the former, Sweet Amber delivers positive aura of a sunny day with its heartfelt melodies.

Eldar Abdulajev, whom we know as EDU, quickly establishes himself as an indispensable member of Nellie Recordings with his third EP, “Purple Rose / Sweet Amber”.

Mykleby - Superman [ARR001]

The first single release on Arrival is from a new face -- Norwegian artist Magnus Mykleby -- and the release is titled "Superman". Smooth chords introduce the first track, the original mix of "Superman". Powerful additional strings as well as various sweeps establish a nice atmosphere, and the main theme becomes more energetic and melodic as the track progresses. Mykleby, Shoreliners aka Mango, and Luke Shipstad have created a second version of "Superman". In this version, we hear a more chilled beat, yet still accompanied by the (toned-down) chord riffs from the original mix. On top of the chord riffs, a brand new lead enhances the already melodic soundscape. "Sunshine" is the third track on this release, and firm chord riffs along with a cool beat are soon established; at the halfway point, a new main melody heightens the energy even more, and various sweet vocal elements are added in the background to create additional texture. The final track is "Summer Breeze", which begins with a rather summery array of chord riffs. As the track progresses, various melodies are added to create a more complex sound. The lush pads also help to provide a great foundation for the overall atmosphere.

Jaytech Interview with Inthemix Australia

Given the calibre of the productions Jaytech has turned out in recent years, he was never going to stay confined to Canberra. The man is now firmly established in Europe as an ambassador for Anjunadeep, the progressive offshoot of Above & Beyond’s ever-widening Anjunabeats family.

Recently Jaytech combined both his A&R and DJ talents to mix one disc of the Anjunadeep 02 compilation, with his label offsider James Grant handling the other. When inthemix caught up with the fast-rising talent today, he was kicking back in a Malaysian hotel room awaiting his weekend of gigs.

How are you finding Malaysia?
I’ve had three days off, so I’ve been wandering around, shopping and chilling by the pool. It’s a hard life [laughs]. Kuala Lumpur tomorrow night and Singapore on Saturday, and it’s the first time for both of them.

Have you had much time recently to focus on productions, or has touring kept you busy?
Well, I had some time off thanks to the volcanic ash. I was supposed to be going to Latvia that weekend, but my flight was obviously cancelled. The next weekend was only one gig, which was a two-hour train away in Poland. So I have had a couple of weeks off to work on production, which I have sorely needed as I’m running a bit behind. I’ve got an album that’s coming out around the end of the year and basically all the tracks are underway, but it’s just about finding time to sit down and have a good flog at them.

Is it hard to make the call on which tracks will make the cut?
You aim a bit higher than what you actually need, but basically I’ve gone through all the projects I’ve done over the past few years and narrowed it down to 14 or 15, which will be the album. They’re all tracks I’m committed to finishing.

One of the biggest points of improvement people noted after my last album was that it didn’t have an artist album flow. A lot of people thought it was a bunch of club tracks sitting next to each other in the latter half of the CD. So this time I’m going to look at some other people’s albums, and look at how they start and finish. The most important thing is that it’s a step forward for my own sound. It is a lot of work to make sure sonically that you’re up to scratch with the rest of the world. A big, full sound with this kind of music is very important.

Are you based in the UK still?
I’m actually in Germany for the summer. I have high-tailed it out of the UK because my two-year working holiday visa has finished. I can have my own apartment in Berlin because cost of living is very cheap, and hire my own studio there. It’s going to be a good spot to finish off my album and work on remixes. I’m travelling pretty much every weekend, so during the weeks I’m working on tracks, organising all the DJ stuff and doing paperwork like resident’s visas. It is nice to have that space to myself during the week, but it just gets crazy every weekend and re-sets it all!

When beginning the Anjunadeep mix with James Grant, did you discuss the different moods you’d both be going for?
Yeah, James has always been further on the deep house tip than myself, whereas I’m more at the cranking end of progressive house at the moment. We just figured the two of us would be a good pair to mix it, because of our varying approach to progressive and because we’ve both been heading the A&R for Anjunadeep these last few years. It was an opportunity to pull together a bunch of stuff from all our favourite artists for one compilation.

Do you feel like there’s a lot of talent on the progressive side of things at the moment?
The best thing about this genre of music is that my favourite track from any given month is going to be from someone I’ve never even heard of before. The process in which these tracks are made requires so little resources and formal training, that you get these amazing tracks coming out of the woodwork from the most unexpected of places. It’ll be interesting to see who breaks ahead of the crowd in coming years and makes it really big.

Do you think the deeper, melodic progressive house is stronger now than it was a few years back?
Yeah, I think at the turn of the century, the progressive house sound was quite an underground thing and you had to do a lot of digging. It was an acquired taste, definitely. Now it has transformed into a style of music that is instantly recognisable by a much wider audience. I think artists like Eric Prydz and Deadmau5 have taken that style and presented it in a way that people can relate to and understand. It’s often a lot more simplistic than it used to be, but with a more powerful effect.

Do you ever feel there’s a discrepancy between your reputation overseas and here at home; that Australia is perhaps slow to recognise certain kinds of talent?
I think Australia is slower to recognise its own local talent with the more underground styles of music. The artists that are best recognised are those who release music that is very uniquely Australian in its nature – you know, the ‘Australian electro house’ sound. I think my sound probably borrows more from the European side of things, and I suppose right from the start I was looking to the UK for my inspiration. It’s only been through going away and coming back a few years later on tour that I’ve noticed my kind of music is starting to take hold in Australia.

I have found with the more traditional flavours of dance music, Australian crowds generally react to someone who has come from far away. That’s not just an Australian thing, it’s all over the world. People are going to go a bit more crazy for the DJs that come from overseas; I think that’s a very natural thing. You see that especially in trance. Trance is the kind of genre where someone from the UK can turn up and people will go wild, but to have a local trance DJ pull a crowd is a much more difficult thing to do.

After doing what they do for a decade, why do you think Anjunabeats has stayed strong?
I think it’s the fact that it’s based around Above & Beyond, who are a very strong DJ act. Rather than just act in the capacity of a record label, they’ve decided to actually make an Anjunabeats family with the artists and the staff. They’ve done lots of special events, like a big festival in Beirut where Above & Beyond played all their own tracks live. They’ve done stages at festivals in India and Brazil, and coming up this July is a big party in Ibiza. They make it more than just a platform for releasing records.

After successfully remixing Sami Saari's Backlash, Marcus continues on his well established and characteristic sound and delivers another melodic tech house track. Flip Switch combines groovy percussions with a deep atmosphere creating a track ready to set almost any dance floor on fire.

Remix duties fall to the label A&R manager Timo Juuti and to Canadian superstar Dezza, who is no stranger to the international dance scene. Sultan - G Stringz (Egostereo Mix) [GUSUM 2DIG]

If there is a label on which we can for sure say that it is an icon of modern underground progressive house - than it is Global Underground without any doubts.

The days are longer and sunnier, the green shoots are sprouting all around… and Global Underground’s latest collection of killer dance cuts today hits the download stores. Spring is the season of excitement!

GU Spring Collection’ is a digital-only compilation of 10 red hot new tracks and remixes from a cross section of heavyweight GU artists. It serves as a taste of what is coming up over the next few months and is a fantastic opportunity to buy a tidy bundle of 10 tracks, seasonally primed for springtime dancefloor devastation.

From Plump DJs track ‘The Knife’ to Egostereo’s mix of Sultan ‘G Stringz’ it’s a fine showcase of the talent currently on the label. Check out Anil Chawla & Dale Anderson’s ‘The Piano’ or Stu Hirst teaming up with Sam Ball on ‘The Beat’. GU artists doing what they do best. Roll on the long, hot summers.

We are really proud of our companions from Italy - Egostereo guys coz their remix of Sultan's latest single G-Stringz is featured as a first track in compilation! As it deserves!

If i need to describe that tune, well first thing that crosses my mind is: elegance. Elegance of sound! Second that hits me: passion! This track is made with passion and from the soul - thats whats more then obvious from a beat to beat! Darker bass line, kicking underground drum, beautiful catching melody with a sort of violine sample in the backround - makes a wonderful tune, real spring cake for all underground progressive nerds around the globe.

U dont wanna miss this one - trust me on that one! So get it while its hot!

Kenneth Thomas - Gunnin [MORPH048]

Morphosis Records proudly presents Kenneth Thomas! 'Gunnin' is a uplifting progressive house tune with nice arps and trancy elements. The shiniest remix come from Shingo Nakamura who made a great summerish interpretation with beautiful melodies. East Cafe made a deeper, darker remix in his well known style, while AFK come up with a nice breakbeat adaptation with some acid lines.

The pick for the boys of Pure People is by far Shingo Nakamura Remix, awesome stuff!

Interview With Darin Epsilon: House Music Missionary from Los Angeles

Darin Epsilon’s work can be found on the top record labels in the world. He has received support from Paul Oakenfold, Hernan Cattaneo, Jody Wisternoff, and countless others, and has worked with numerous highprofile artists such as Matthew Dekay, Dresden & Johnston, and Kenneth Thomas. Headliner of numerous parties in different corners of the world flew over the globe to play in Mechanika club April, 10 (Khabarovsk, Russia). We simply couldn’t miss our chance to talk with him!

Glad to introduce Darin Epsilon!

Darin, what is the latest achievement you are proud of?

I’ve been collaborating with a lot of artists recently. I have a remix of Dave Dresden from Gabriel & Dresden coming soon. It will be on his new personal label and my fourth release for this year. I’m also continuing to work on lots of new music, so hopefully I’ll play more around the world, especially in Russia because I love Russia.

What other countries are in your top destinations list?

Mexico and Holland because of the big parties there!

A city you’d love to come play in?

Buenos Aires – they have legendary parties.

And people love your kind of music there!

True. They have the whole culture thing there.

That’s why I was surprised to hear you love to play in Russia – we are less accustomed to dance
music compared to European or US clubbers.

Well, mainstream dance music is becoming quite popular lately. Lady GaGa, Black Eyed Peas, etc. It’s definitely catching on, but it’s not really what I’m about. I’m trying to push my specific sound and my specific message.

Which is…?

… very underground. It’s like the comparison of drinking beer and wine.

So you’re wine?

True, the kind of music that we enjoy is very sophisticated, smart kind of music. So yes, it’s wine.

Do you think people actually realize they’re drinking wine instead of beer?

Some do. And that’s our goal – to keep spreading this music. Believe it or not, it’s almost like a religion thing, we’re almost like missionaries. When you discover tech house and progressive house, you realize it’s like the most beautiful music ever, so we’re trying to push the sound and get the people to follow. I mean this sounds crazy but it’s true.

Who in the scene do you admire the most?

Hernan Cattaneo and Jody Wisternoff. They are doing what I would like to be doing in terms of pushing a specific sound and they are both very nice guys. There are a lot of talented people out there, but it’s rare when these people maintain a professional attitude to all people at all times, and I really respect that.

What’s on your iPod playlist?

Tons of music. I get hundreds of emails from people sending me music. I don’t even have time to listen the music for fun. Before, I would listen to any – ambient, rock, but now I only have time to listen to music I can play in my sets.

Your golden rules for aspiring djs?

Honestly, DJing is a full-time job. Sometimes I spend 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, just working on producing music and marketing myself. The best advice is to work a lot and build your profile. In this field, networking is key. It’s important to know the right people to move your career to the next level.

Is it important to find your sound at the beginning of your career?

The successful DJs that I know have a very specific sound that people recognize them for. When I started, I played any kind of music that was good to me - house, d’n’b, techno. If you want to get to the next level, you should define your sound and have people recognize it and say ‘Oh – I know this DJ!’ It’s all about creating your own brand, so when people hear your name, they know what to expect.

What should people expect to hear from Darin Epsilon?

Hopefully quality, progressive and underground house music.

SQL - Leisure Battery [SXR0008]

The first was one of the bigger packages of last year entitled 'Chocolate' which came with an outstanding remix from Lank. This time SQL brings us his dancefloor killer 'Leisure Battery'. Featuring remixes from young canadian and fast-rising producer Soundprank, italian DJ, producer and "Star 69" label manager Ray Costa and already known on Spherax Bin Fackeen teamed up with label boss Klever. SQL's original mix is a very classy modern day melodic techno tune with a very mature and refined sound, one that should attract lots of top DJs. Soundprank's interpretation is another real progressive gem with perfectly spaced production, great melodic lines and again a very mature feel. Hard to believe he's only just begun his production career. Bin Fackeen & Klever offer a nice alternative as well with a much funkier, choppy mix. Definitely one to add some bounce to most dancefloors. Spherax has proven itself to be one of the best up and coming progressive labels this year.

01. SQL – Leisure Battery (Original Mix)
02. SQL – Leisure Battery (Soundprank Remix)
03. SQL – Leisure Battery (Bin Fackeen & Klever Remix)
04. SQL – Leisure Battery (Ray Costa Remix)

Big PP reccomendation for Soundprank Remix!
